Eli Roth portrait Work in Progress

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

After the ADHD disaster that was my last attempt at drawing a portrait (the John Locke that was never finished) I decided to take on one that might be easier. Closer on the face, very little upper body and arms and on smaller paper. This one is 11X14 rather than 14X17. It’s going quite well. Worked on it for about two hours last night while watching the last couple episodes from the first season of The Adventures of Pete and Pete.
So far it’s entirely a 2B mechanical pencil and some paper towel for blending. As you can see, I’m no where near disciplined enough to start on one small piece and work my way around the picture until it’s finished. I go all over the place. I wish I could do that.
Like Pat McMichael does with his drawings

He focuses on one section and finishes that section and then moves onto the next and then the next and so on until it’s finished. My attention span is way too limited to do that. I tend to flitter all over the picture until hopefully it looks finished at some point.
Hopefully this won’t take much longer to finish. I’m maybe halfway there. Maybe a little farther.
here is the original photo: [link]
This one is challenging in it’s own way because the original photo is fairly small and it isn’t very clear when printed at full size for my reference. But I think I can pull it off.
The subject of this picture of my favorite modern horror film maker Eli Roth, who wrote and directed Cabin Fever and Hostel.

Artistic ADD

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

So this is a perfect example of artistic ADD.

Here is the portrait of John Locke from Lost that I’ve been working on for about… oh… a month and a half I think. It’s been that long because I drew most of what you see here and then got bored with it and stopped working on it. I stopped drawing entirely because I wanted to work on other things, but I didn’t want to give up on this picture. I knew that if I put it aside, it would end up never finished and the time I’d already invested into it would be wasted.

But I’ve finally thrown in the towel. I’m so bored with working on this picture that when I actually sit down and try and force myself, it’s almost like torture. I hate it. I want to work on something else and I start resenting the unfinished picture that’s been sitting there for weeks.

So yeah, this is far as I’m gonna get on this one. The actual drawing is quite a bit larger and follows down to about his middle, showing his arms and hands. That was was really killing me. I hate drawing arms and hands. I love drawing faces but I get really bored drawing other parts of the body. And, as you can see, I get pretty bored doing background blending as well, since I only blended half of the background. Not even half, since I didn’t even finish the left side.

Something that happens to me constantly and gets on my nerves is this:

I was outside reading my book and having a smoke. While I’m reading my brain starts wandering.

“Ya know, Steve’s mentioning Jesus a fair bit in this book. Did he find God or something? Well, he did almost die, violently even, when he got hit by the van a few years back. But wait a minute, he already found god. He’s a Baptist. Or is he a Methodist? He’s one of those two I think. Hey, remember that lady in the hot tub when we were living in the hotel when I was like, fifteen? She was trying to convince me that Stephen King and Clive Barker were devil worshipers and had big Satanic ceremonies where they sacrificed animals and I told her that she completely wrong. She worked for a radio station and said she had to give away tickets to a Steely Dan concert and offered me some and I didn’t take them because I didn’t know who Steely Dan was at the time and then mom was all like ‘Dude! You should have taken them! Steely Dan’s pretty cool!’ and then I was all like ‘Dude! I totally should have!’ and I went back down to the hottub but she was gone but that other chick was there with her brother and her brother tried to tell me that Gene Simmons was friends with his dad and they he taught him how to play guitar and the sister kept sitting up on the edge of the hot tub and her bathing suit was too small and I could see the sides of her pubic hair coming out and I kept trying not to look but morbid fascination forced me to look and it wasn’t even sexy it was just kind of gross. That must have been before the whole shaving thing got popular.”

And then I realize that I’ve read two pages of my book but haven’t actually taken any of the information in and I’ve got to go back and start over.

ADD

Monday, October 10th, 2005

Well, I took the tests and whatnot and I had another appointment with the guy. Apparently not only do I have ADHD, but I have severe ADHD. The tests I took were measured on a scale of 1-9.

There are three types of ADHD. There’s inattentive and hyperactive and there’s combined. I tested an 8 on hyperactive and a 9 on inattentive, which makes me a combined.

The downside of it all is that I also took tests for depression, and I scored a 55 on that (not on the 1-8 scale) when a healthy average is 25. The problem with this is that apparently the drugs you take for ADHD tend to conflict with the drugs you take for depression.

The other shitty thing is that there is a drug that treats both ADHD and depression called Wellbutrin. What sucks about that is that I’m allergic to wellbutrin. I found that out the hard way when I took some to help with quitting smoking and I broke out in horrible hives all over my body and had to go into the hospital. That was bad news bears.

So yeah…

The guy I’m seeing says that we have to deal with the depression before we can deal with the ADHD.

OMG I love Disneyland. And girls in thongs. I’m gonna go look at pictures of girls in thongs. BRB
